Price for the whole job.
Keep the profit.
A practical pricing guide for Al. Published shop benchmarks, a cost-based calculator and the rules a quote assistant needs before it talks to customers.
Useful comparisons.
Different scopes.
Start with Powder-X’s September 14, 2026 pricing guide. Its useful principle is to cost the complete workflow—from preparation and setup through inspection and packing—and compare estimates with real job costs.
| Source | Published price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| JTS Coatings · Illinois | $100 / hour | Published shop rate; includes labor, media blasting and powder coating. Guide labeled 2026. |
| Jimbo’s · Washington | $200 minimum | Minimum for powder coating or sandblasting. Undated page; observed October 13, 2026. |
| Jimbo’s · handrails | $16–18 / linear ft | Starting prices by height; weight, preparation and masking change the quote. |
| Powder Doctor · Colorado | $24 / ft + $11 / ft | Straight exterior steel handrail: coating plus zinc primer. Preparation assessed separately. |
These are individual US shops’ published examples, not national averages, local competitor research or Al’s price list. Undated pages were observed October 13, 2026. A retail hourly rate is not a loaded labor cost. Never copy a low unit price without matching its preparation and finish scope.
Start with what Al charges.
Measure what each job costs.
Reported by Al in October 2026. These are current examples, not an approved replacement rate card. Preparation and color affect the scope. Custom parts and vehicle frames need inspection before a project quote.
| Work | Current reference | Scope to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Car frame | $1,200–$1,500 | Blasting included; confirmed with Al through the user. |
| Motorcycle frame | $400–$500 | Inspect preparation and finish. |
| Rear end | $400 example | Assembly, preparation and finish need review. |
| Handrails | $25 / linear ft | Compare with full preparation, powder, handling and oven costs. |
| Wheels | $125 each + powder | Include landed powder cost and a measured margin; do not leave materials out. |
| Blasting only | $125 / hour | A selling rate, not Al’s measured labor cost. Do not add it again to an inclusive part price. |
| Silver headers | $350 + about $100 coating | Specialty example; confirm product, service conditions and temperature specification. |
Al reports that blast time is not always logged or recovered, powder is often absorbed on large orders, and powder for wheels is passed through without margin. Track these costs in the next 15–20 jobs before approving new rates. Stock powder still has a cost.
The agent compares rail and wheel references with the full provisional cost model. The wheel scenario includes the selected powder’s cost and selling margin once, with a 25% redo reserve. It does not stack the $125/hour retail blast rate onto part prices that already include preparation.
Timing: smaller custom work usually takes 1–3 days after powder arrives; most large orders take about a week. Custom colors usually take about 3 days to arrive after ordering. Al confirms each completion date.
Make every step count.
Include receiving and inspection, stripping or blasting, cleaning and pretreatment, masking, racking, coating, handling, curing, quality checks, packing and administration. Charge for the resources the job consumes.
fully allocated job cost ÷ (1 − target job margin))
Margin is not markup. A $300 cost at a 40% job margin requires a $500 selling price. Adding a 40% markup gives $420, only a 28.6% margin. The 40% is an arithmetic example, not an industry target.
Because this cost model includes overhead, “job margin” means profit relative to that defined cost base. It is not an accounting gross-margin measure. Keep oven and equipment costs separate only when they are not already included in overhead or hourly rates.
- Set a minimum lot charge. Receiving, setup, color changes, cleanup and administration happen even on a small job.
- Price preparation explicitly. Old coatings, corrosion, complex masking and disassembly can dominate labor. Use a condition range or inspect first.
- Price oven occupancy. Include required cycles, allocated capacity, handling and racking. Large awkward pieces can block profitable batch space.
- Cost the finish system. Specialty powder, primer, clear and extra coats add landed material cost, labor and cure cycles. One flat surcharge is only a placeholder until measured.
- Charge for rush work after checking capacity. Account for overtime, separate cycles and work displaced. Smaller custom work typically takes 1–3 days after powder arrives; most large orders take about a week. Custom-color delivery usually adds about 3 days after ordering. Confirm each job’s timing.
- Discount verified savings. Same-color batches or repeat setups may reduce cost. Recalculate from the lower cost; never discount below the approved floor.
- Learn from the next 15–20 jobs. Track estimated versus actual hours, powder, oven cycles, rework, accepted quotes and profit. Update rates and uncertainty ranges with evidence.
For powder consumption, use IFS’s coverage calculator or TIGER’s calculator. Film thickness, specific gravity and transfer efficiency affect pounds needed. Powder consumption is only part of the job cost.
The powder is part of the price.
The three-step instant quote wizard includes the chosen Prismatic powder, a 25% extra-powder allowance confirmed by the user, and a material margin. The full color catalog remains optional.
Powder selling charge = supplier cost ÷ (1 − margin)
Four-wheel example: 4 lb planned use + 1 lb reserve = 5 lb. Prismatic recommends 3–4 lb for four standard car wheels. The model uses the upper amount for an 18-inch wheel profile and scales by diameter; this is a conservative starting allowance, not measured R&R consumption.
For other supported shapes, pounds = coated area × specific gravity × film thickness in mils ÷ (192.3 × transfer efficiency). The engine uses the upper area estimate before adding the reserve. RAL-9005, RAL-9010 and RAL-7016 use their manufacturer TDS specific gravity and upper 3-mil recommendation. Other products use provisional 1.6 specific gravity and 3 mils. All use provisional 65% transfer efficiency. Product specifications, geometry and actual shop transfer efficiency need calibration.
Supplier snapshot: October 15, 2026; prices for 6,105 of 6,200 catalog products. The other 95 need price confirmation. Unit-price tiers apply to the planned whole-pound purchase. Prices exclude tax and supplier freight; shop stock and landed cost remain unconfirmed. Prices older than 30 days require a refresh before an automatic price.
The provisional material margin is 45%. A 5 lb RAL-9005 order at $11.17/lb costs $55.85; its included selling charge is $101.55. This is already part of the total, not an extra amount to add. The old $1.10/sq-ft powder allowance and flat special-color surcharge are replaced in the customer engine. Separate consumables use a provisional $0.20/sq-ft allowance. The general 10% process contingency applies to labor, oven and consumables only; it does not add the powder reserve twice.
Two-coat and specialty systems need separate product and application review. The engine never assumes a primer or clear costs the same as the base powder. Review Al’s labor, consumables, energy, job margin and actual powder use before approving replacement prices.

A pricing workbench.
This separate illustrative worksheet retains its editable area-based material input. The customer quote engine uses the product-specific powder calculation above. Replace the sample costs with Al’s measured numbers. The lower and upper prices use two hands-on labor scenarios. All other costs remain fixed; they must also be reviewed if uncertain. This is not a statistical confidence interval.
Includes setup, materials, allocated oven cycles, overhead and a cost contingency before the margin calculation. Changes stay in this worksheet and do not change customer pricing.
Hands-on hours should include preparation, masking, racking, application, inspection and packing. Taxes and unentered freight, repair, installation and disassembly are excluded.
AI gathers the details.
Rules set the price.
Every inquiry should get a useful answer. A price range is appropriate only when the job fits Al’s verified capabilities and an approved pricing profile. An unfamiliar or underspecified job needs follow-up or manual review.
- Listen. Capture the customer’s description, quantity, material, full dimensions, weight, condition, finish, masking, use environment, deadline and logistics.
- Clarify. Ask only for missing details. Dimensions and photos help, but photos cannot reliably establish unseen surfaces, exact material or required preparation.
- Check capability. Use the reported oven dimensions: 26 feet long, 100 inches wide and 7 feet tall (312 × 100 × 84 inches). Confirm usable interior space, door opening, rack clearance, hanging orientation and load limits. Oven dimensions are not guaranteed maximum part dimensions.
- Calculate. Map an eligible job to an approved, versioned labor/material/cycle profile. Deterministic code applies cost, uncertainty, minimum and margin to both ends of the range.
- Explain. Show the range, included scope, assumptions, exclusions and next steps. Confirm final price and timing with Al.
Human review: unknown substrates, heavy corrosion, special technical specifications, uncertain oven fit, multi-part assemblies, specialty finishes, rush timing or orders outside approved profiles.
Current build: both sites use a three-step wizard: project, dimensions and condition, then powder. A short optional description fills in recognized facts for review. The server calculates supported jobs with the selected supplier powder price, pounds, a 25% redo allowance and provisional margin. Exact-product search is included; the full visual catalog is optional. ChatGPT tools use the same engine. No website AI provider, lead storage, delivery or booking is configured. Drafts stay in the browser tab’s session storage until cleared or the session ends. Al must calibrate the cost profiles and confirm final prices.
Two audiences.
One business reputation.
Recommendation: use rrpowder.com for commercial work and custom.rrpowder.com for custom work, with distinct service content and one shared R&R business identity. The two sites describe one new business and do not need separate Business Profiles.
Google says the same SEO fundamentals apply to its AI features; there is no required special AI file or schema. Publish clear, factual service pages, visible FAQs and verified business details. See Google’s official guidance.
- Verify the business. Logan, Ohio is confirmed as the operating base. The owner clarified on October 16, 2026 that R&R Powder Coating is a separate new business at the former Ohio R&R location, and Ohio R&R has closed. Prepare a new Business Profile with the actual business name and verified contact details. Handle the old profile separately; do not transfer its reviews or history to the new business. The purchased domain is rrpowder.com.
- Prove the advantages. Publish real project photos, measured oven limits, Al’s actual preparation steps, finish capabilities and typical turnaround. Avoid fabricated reviews or certifications.
- Approve pricing. Review recent invoices against labor, powder, energy, setup and rework costs. Approve minimums, job margins, finish rules, payment/quote terms and automation limits.
- Replace the personal email. Set up a business email address on the chosen business domain. Domain, email provider and mailbox name are still undecided. After setup, update website contact details, quote correspondence and business contact records. No business mailbox or email delivery is configured yet.
- Connect the quote workflow. Configure the AI service, an approved rate card and job profiles, a protected lead destination, contact delivery and retention rules. Validate against Al’s real quotes.
- Enable public discovery. Service pages now have canonical domain URLs, sitemaps and search metadata. The original chatgpt.site hosts stay noindex. Commercial access is public; custom access still needs to be made public before Google can crawl it. Domain validation and Google Search Console verification remain separate steps. Add full LocalBusiness details after the address, phone and hours are verified.
- Measure business results. Use Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and consent-appropriate analytics. Track inquiry source, quote completion, accepted jobs, profit per job and oven capacity—not just visits.
For ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot when the sites become public. Its access is separate from GPTBot training permissions. Bing AI Performance can help track citations. No setup guarantees rankings or AI recommendations.
First month: photograph five representative jobs with permission, complete the Business Profile, create a clear capabilities sheet for local fabricators and contractors, and ask completed customers for honest reviews. Build a repeat-work offer around committed quantities, common colors and planned drop-offs that actually reduce cost. No outreach has been sent.
